Folly Beach is a unique beach town, known as “The Edge of America” for its ideal location, just off the shore of South Carolina’s most popular city, Charleston. Folly Beach is home to more than 2,000 residents who enjoy an island lifestyle with its own laid back culture and pace. With downtown Charleston only 15 minutes away, residents have the best of both worlds. There is plenty to do in and around Folly Beach including fishing at the Folly Beach fishing pier, turtle watching, antique shopping, golfing on one of the many lush courses in Charleston or relaxing on Folly Beach County Park’s more than 2,000 feet of ocean frontage. Frequent surfing contests are held at the famous “Washout” surfing spot on the east end. Also on the east side is the renowned Morris Island Lighthouse and old abandoned Coast Guard property.
Folly’s business district is located at the center of the island. Center Street stretches approximately four blocks long and offers everything from beachwear and water equipment to three-star dining and thriving pubs. At the end of Center Street is the Folly Beach Edwin S. Taylor Pier which is 24 feet wide, extends more than 1,045 feet into the Atlantic Ocean. It is an incredible engineering and architectural sight and is a great place for a leisurely stroll in the evening.
Folly’s coast stretches six miles and is the perfect place to catch a wave, sail the shores, walk the pier, ride bikes, walk dogs, view dolphins, explore the many creeks, view vibrant sunsets and indulge in a variety of tasty cuisines.
Folly Beach enjoys a strong, growing economy and although residents look forward to a bright future, they also aim to preserve the island’s rich past.
